What R-Value Do I Need for Winter Camping?
For cold-weather camping, choose a sleeping pad with a higher R-value to help reduce heat loss to the ground. R-value measures thermal resistance — the higher the number, the more insulation the pad provides. For winter camping, many campers look for pads around R 5.5 or higher, depending on ground temperature, sleeping bag rating, shelter type and personal warmth needs.
